POKOTABI / Shiotake
塩武
Located in Kawaramachi, Kameoka, traditional confectioner Shiotake is celebrated for its light, subtly salted red bean paste, featured in rustic inaka manju, mugwort mochi, and seasonal specialties such as sakuramochi, mizumanju, and warabimochi.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
At traditional confectioner Shiotake in Kameoka's Kawaramachi area, the sweet red bean paste is known for a subtle hint of salt that accentuates its flavor. With moderate sweetness and a clean aftertaste that never feels cloying, it has earned a loyal following. Regulars often come specifically for the rustic inaka manju, where a tender, simple dough wrapper complements the rich aroma of adzuki beans. The counter also features kusa mochi, balancing a pleasant chew with gentle sweetness, alongside staples like dorayaki that let the natural qualities of mochi and adzuki shine.
The shop's offerings shift with the seasons. Spring brings sakuramochi wrapped in salted cherry leaves and kashiwamochi for the Boy's Festival, while summer ushers in translucent mizumanju, slippery warabimochi, chilled mizu-yokan, and ayu-shaped waka-ayu cakes. Because each piece is modestly sized and reasonably priced, selecting several seasonal varieties to compare makes for an enjoyable treat.
Despite the modest size of the shop, the staff take care to assist with gift wrapping and noshi paper presentation, making for an unhurried visit. Opening at 8:00 and accepting credit cards as well as PayPay, it serves as an easy stop whether picking up an everyday snack on a walk or choosing a thoughtful gift.
